It’s equal parts refreshing, tangy, spicy, and salty—basically, a burst of delicious flavor in a glass.

What is Agua Mineral Preparada

Agua mineral in English refers to mineral water—typically the sparkling kind—and preparada means “prepared” or “put together,” hinting at how the drink is layered with flavorful ingredients.

You can think of agua mineral preparada as the non-alcoholic cousin of a michelada—minus the beer, but packed with just as much flavor.

This popular drink combines sparkling mineral water (Topo Chico is the fan favorite), fresh lime juice, a pinch of salt, chamoy sauce and Tajín seasoning. It’s mixed and served in a tall glass rimmed with chamoy and Tajín and loaded with ice.

Agua preparada has long been a popular drink in northeastern Mexico and South Texas, especially in border towns along the U.S.-Mexico border.

This drink is different than traditional aguas frescas because it’s not made with a fruit or other typical agua fresca recipes and flavors.

A display of ingredients for agua mineral preparada: ice, tamarindo sticks, chamoy sauce, salt, Tajín seasoning, limes, and a bottle of Topo Chico sparkling water on a table.

Ingredients

Sparkling Water: I like to use Topo Chico but any carbonated water with strong carbonation is ideal.

Salt and freshly squeezed lime juice.

Chamoy sauce and Tajin seasoning: Used both to rim the glass and mix into the drink.

Ice: Essential for keeping the drink extra cold and refreshing. Use lots—crushed or whole both work great.

Additional Ingredient Options
You can change the flavor by using a combination of Topo Chico and Squirt soft drink to change up the flavor.

For toppings you can include sliced or chopped cucumber, chopped strawberries or even mango chunks.
Add more flavor and heat with tamarind candy straw.

If You Don’t Like Spicy

You can make your agua mineral preparada with just the lime juice and a little salt and a dash of Tajin. Or you can skip the Tajin and chamoy sauce all together.

How to Serve

Agua mineral preparada is perfect for hot summer days, backyard get-togethers, or as a refreshing mocktail alternative. It’s especially great for anyone craving bold flavor without added sugar or piquete (a.k.a. grown-up drinks).

Serve it ice-cold when you’re trying to beat the heat. It’s delicious on its own, but also pairs perfectly with fun Mexican appetizers like ceviche de soya, pico de gallo with chips, marinated vegan cheese cubes, chorizo-cheese dip, or a classic guacamole and totopos.

Nancy’s Tips

• Sparkling Mineral Water: Choose one with lots of bubbles—lime juice, chamoy, and Tajín can mellow the fizz quickly.
Flavor Variations: Try mixing in a splash of your favorite soft drink for a fun twist.
Toppings: Get creative! Cucumber, tamarindo sticks, or even fruit chunks can make each glass unique.
Chamoy Sauce: Explore different brands and flavors—some are tangier, others sweeter or spicier.
Mild Version: Skip or reduce the Tajín and chamoy if you prefer a non-spicy drink.
