Huevos con Salchicha (Hot Dogs and Eggs)

What a better way to start the morning than with some breakfast tacos! Am I right? These huevo con salchicha or hot dogs with scrambled egg tacos are perfect for adults and children.

Huevos con Salchicha

If you’re Mexican or have Mexican friends, then you know this egg and hot dog or huevos con salchicha meal very well. Every Mexican person I know has eaten this dish as a kid — and actually many continue to eat it as adults.

Huevos con salchicha can be served on its own on a plate. Or it can be accompanied by warm tortillas or maybe a bolillo.

It’s fantastic on either but I personally love making tacos out of it. That way I can have breakfast tacos.

Vegan Hot Dogs not Meat Hot Dogs

Of course this recipe uses vegan not meat hot dogs!

Vegan hot dogs taste a million times better than meat ones!

Meat hot dogs are absolutely disgusting — was never a fan even before going meatless.

Normally I don’t do a whole lot of processed vegan meats in my diet. Remember just because it’s vegan doesn’t automatically make it healthy. Though these hot dogs aren’t made with meat, they are still a processed food. So think of it as an occasionally treat.

As for the brand to use for these breakfast tacos, use your favorite one.

I buy ones that don’t have many preservatives and are made with a mixture of part gluten and part soy. They have some seasonings too and we’ve found them to be a perfect replacement for the real thing.

When you buy yours do read the package ingredients list. Make your purchasing decision on the one with the least amount off additives — it’s processed food so you can’t completely get away from them.

How to Make it Vegan

Super easy, swap the eggs for tofu! So crumble it then add a pinch of salt and ground turmeric and mix until well combined. Then add it to the crispy tofu and cook for a few minutes. Done!

Another option is to use a Vegan Egg powder and follow the instructions for the mixing. Then pour it into the hot dogs and stir until cooked and well combined.

Hot Dogs with Scrambled Eggs

This recipe is really quite simple. Not much to it. If you have a child they may even want to help you. Because we all know children love hot dogs.

For children just serve the scrambled eggs with hot dog slices inside warm corn or flour tortillas. Maybe a little fruit on the side.

For adults you may want to serve with some homemade salsa, or pickled jalapeños and carrots or just hot sauce. For a full breakfast serve with some cafe con leche or tea. I also like to have a small bowl of seasonal fruit on the side.

If you don’t want them for breakfast they’re also great for brunch or a super easy dinner even.

Easy Breakfast Tacos

I love these super easy breakfast tacos.

Specially when I have some fresh homemade chunky salsa at home. If I don’t I’ll use jalapenos or hot sauce. But I remember as a kid I used to also like to have ketchup on them. It’s really up to everyone to enjoy as they wish.

Thanks for stopping by! Please remember to leave a comment and a star rating for my recipes. This is a way you can help support me.

Gracias amigos and buen provecho!

  1. My mother made this when I was a kid but she used Vienna Sausage from a can! I like your version MUCH better! Love the slices of peppers and then wrapping in a tortilla. That’s just perfect! A great breakfast for the kid in me. 🙂

    1. Wow, really I always just assumed that it was only here that we ate it — then again, it’s such an obvious combination isn’t it? Thank you and I hope you satisfy that kid in you with this breakfast. 🙂

      1. I can’t find your corn tortilla recipe anywhere? As a suggestion, maybe you could link back to your recipe(s). Thank you.

        1. Hi Brian! I only have the flour tortilla recipe published so far, the corn will be added soon. Here’s the recipe to the flour tortillas.

  2. I’ve actually had the meat version of this made for me many times by a wonderful Mexican woman I used to know. She moved back to Mexico to retire but I’ll always associate this meal with her. Thanks for reminding me. GREG

    1. Oh that is so sweet, Greg. I’m glad that she made this for you and that you got to experience it from a Mexican lady, maybe she made it for her children too. Thank you!

  3. Funny, I actually remember something pretty similar from my childhood, scrambled eggs with slices of kielbasa (Polish sausage). Without the chiles and tortillas, of course… But that sounds awfully good!

  4. Hi! Where do you get these hot dogs in Playa? We are also vegan and get a few “meat” items from Dak but I haven’t been able to find a good hot dog anywhere..including Dak!

    1. Hi Stasia!

We buy them at Dac from the counter where they have the other veggie meats. I was never a big fan of the regular hot dogs and found that I like these veggie ones better. My husband says that these are okay, but I quite enjoy them. From Dac I also like to sometimes get their veggie burgers and the chorizo, neither are the best but do the job when the cravings strike. 🙂

Have you tried BIO-Natural on 10th or the new one on 5th between 40 & 42 streets? There is also the organics & vegan store on 26th street which carries some veggie meats.

We are slowly getting more vegan options here in Playa but still have a long way to go. Good luck!

      1. Yes, we check those markets out regularly and you are right, slowly but surely more options are arriving in Playa. I do love the burgers and soyrizo from Dak. BTW I followed Spicie Foodie for years (vegan portobello steak wraps are my fave!) then found this one looking for vegan Mexican recipes- so cool that you’re the author of this one too and living in the same town 🙂 !!

        1. Wow, Stasia what a small World we live in right? Thank you so much for following and glad to hear you liked the wraps — still one of my faves too. 🙂

Grew up eating huevos con salchichas, I think that was one of my favorite breakfast meals. just made it for the kids and they loved it.

  6. “Meat hot dogs are absolutely disgusting”. This comment was not necessary. Good for you that you’re vegan, but you don’t need to degrade anyone who does like them. The real thing is way better than your disgusting fake attempt. Any day with all your recipes! Doesn’t feel so great to be called disgusting does it. To each it’s own, you don’t like them, that’s all you had to say. You shouldn’t be coming up on a huevo con salchicha search . If I wanted vegan I would’ve searched vegan huevo con salchicha

    1. Hi Lexi!
My blog’s name and URL are Mexican Made Meatless…so…
Eggs are not vegan. I didn’t say I was vegan.
I said hot dogs are disgusting…not that people that eat them (you included) are disgusting.

I have no problem with you not liking my “fake attempt”. My website and recipes are for people looking for meatless recipes.

Guess what, people — yes even amongst us non-meat eaters, we all have things we may find “disgusting” that someone else finds delicious. The beautiful thing about this world is that we’re all entitled to our own opinions.

Don’t let my recipe upset you so much, there’s a lot worst or more “disgusting” things to be upset about.

      Have a beautiful day!
