Pan de muerto or Day of the Dead bread is not to be missed. Traditionally it forms part of the altar ofrendas and can be enjoyed with a cup of Mexican hot chocolate. This vegan pan de muerto recipe is an absolute winner!

Mix the yeast, a little flour, sugar and some lukewarm soy milk in a small bowl. Set aside to activate yeast.

Beat Ingredients

Pour the remaining ingredients in the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix with a dough hook until well combined.

Add Yeast

Add the activated yeast to the dough. Knead dough with the bread hook until it comes together.

The dough is ready when it comes together and you can stretch it without it breaking or ripping.

Rest

Rest the dough in a greased bowl and rub oil all over the dough ball. Cover, leave to double in a warm spot.

Shape Pan de Muerto

Divide the risen dough into small balls then roll out and shape the huesitos and place on the bread.

Second Rest

Leave the shaped pan de muerto to rest in a warm spot for 35 to 40 minutes.

Bake

Bake then allow to cool to room temperature before decorating.

Decorate

Brush with melted vegan butter then sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar all over the bread. Ready to eat!
