Mangonada or Mangonada Margarita
So you’ll notice that this recipe is quite similar to my mangonada recipe, but there are a few differences.
Yes they both use mango, chamoy sauce, Tajin chile-lime salt and lime juice.
But the mangonada recipe doesn’t use tequila nor triple sec like the margarita. In the mangonada you can use water or mango nectar instead.
Basically a mangonada is a very sweet and non-alcoholic version of a mango margarita.
Read on to see more of the differences – and hey don’t be shy and go ahead and also make my mangonada recipe for the kids at your party, and the margarita for the adults.

What is a Margarita?
A margarita is an alcoholic beverage traditionally made with tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur called triple sec.
The origins of margaritas have some variations to the story.
Some say it was invented by a restaurant owner in Texas around the 1930s. Others say that a Texan socialite created the cocktail in the 1940s during one of her house parties in Mexico.
Whichever the actual origin of this citrusy cocktail is, it’s since become one of the most popular cocktails in the US. It’s also a drink commonly offered in Mexican bars and restaurants too.
The traditional margarita is said to be only a mix of fresh lime juice, tequila and either Cointreau or triple sec, which are both orange-flavored liqueurs. The rim of the glass is just salt and the cocktail is served over ice.
Frozen margaritas are believed to have originated in the 1950s with the invention of domestic blenders.
The traditional margarita is lime flavored, but nowadays there are many variations that use different fresh fruit and flavorings.
I think the point of a margarita is to just have fun and experiment with different flavors like this mango and chamoy margarita.

Mango Chamoy Margarita Ingredients
The ingredients for this fun cocktail are not many and are easily found just about anywhere.
- frozen mango chunks
- chamoy sauce
- Tajin seasoning
- orange juice (instead of the orange liqueur)
- lime juice
- silver tequila also called tequila blanco
- agave nectar (instead of sugar or simple syrup)
- ice cubes
- tamarind candy straw
Where to Buy The Ingredients
You can get the chamoy and Tajin at any Mexican or Hispanic grocery store. Of course there’s also Amazon which always has them in stock.
In a pinch if you can’t find chamoy sauce you could use a mild spicy hot sauce. But try to find the chamoy.
- Chamoy and Tajin pack
- Sugar Free Chamoy Sauce
- Mega Chamoy
- El Chilerito Chamoy
- Low Sodium Tajin
- Classic Tajin Seasoning
You can also get the agave nectar and your tamarind straw on Amazon. Below are the brands I use.
What is Chamoy
Chamoy is a bright red Mexican sauce made with pureed dried fruit, water, sugar, chile, and vinegar. The result is a thick sauce or paste that’s sweet, spicy, tart and fruity. It’s hugely popular in Mexico.
What is Tajin
Tajin is the ultimate seasoning when it comes to adding a bit of spice to your snacks and drinks. A popular Mexican condiment, Tajin is a combination of red chili powder, lime and salt.
Can I Use Frozen Mango
Yes, I actually did for this mango chamoy margarita recipe. If you want to use fresh ripe mangos then cube them and then freeze them or make sure you add lots of ice to the blender instead.
How to Peel and Dice Mango
I have a really excellent video guide on how to peel and dice mangos, you can watch it here The Easiest and Fastest Way to Peel a Mango (Video Tutorial)
What Type of Tequila Should I use for This Mango Chamoy Margarita
The best tequila to use is silver tequila, (also known as tequila blanco) it works best for this recipe because it has an light flavor that pairs nicely with both the mango and chamoy sauce. However if you prefer añejo or reposado that’s fine too.
Margarita without Triple Sec | Margarita without Cointreau
This margarita recipe doesn’t use triple sec. It also doesn’t use Cointreau. I’m not a fan of either so they are substituted with orange juice and lime juice. Promise you won’t miss either of those liqueurs.
Is This a Skinny Margarita Recipe
Yes! My recipe doesn’t use simple syrup and instead uses just a little bit of agave nectar for a lower calorie cocktail. Additionally because we are using juices instead of orange liqueur the calories are less.
